                        0. What's NEW?

The main new (and I believe the only :() feature that was added is the
possibility to update "game-screen" team logos by importing them from
PCX-file. This 3.01 version works only with specific PCX-files:
The file should contain 32x24 (width x height) picture with the palette
of 20 colors. (see more about that in part 8 of this manual)

                        1. History

March 20,1998: JED 3.01 Final Release is done. New feature added
                    that wasn't implemented in 3.01-beta: PCX-file export.
(game-screen logo can be exported as a PCX-file)

February 6,1998: JED 3.01 beta completed. This version does not yet
supports NHL Hockey'93, so it can be used only with
NHL Hockey'95. JED 3.02 will support both versions of
                    the game.

November 21,1996: JED3&5 appears. The new version combines two previous
editors in one. It now works with both NHL Hockey files
                    and NHL Hockey'95 files.

October 9,1996: JED95 1.0 has been upgraded to JED95 1.5. This version
presents new features: COPY TO FILE/PASTE TO FILE new
functions. Still not compatible with NHL'93.

October 6,1996: JED95 1.0 appeared. The editor works especially with
NHL Hockey 95 files and was not compatible with JED93.

August 1,1996: JED93 1.0 has been written. The editor supports the
original version of the game - NHL Hockey (NHL'93).

=========================================================================

                        2. What is JED 3.01?

JED 3.01 is a jersey/logo editor for the PC game NHL Hockey'95
by EA Sports (Electronic Arts). It was designed for the really devoted
players (FANS of the game) and the main goal was to provide a tool to
edit the jerseys, and not to present a fantastic user interface. That's
why the editor has a lot to improve in the later versions.

The only features of the editor are "jersey painting" and "logo updating";
It does not affect any other game files that, for instance, contain the
information about the team names and players. There are several editors
available on the Web that can do the tricks with the names (see, for
example, Christian Jahnsen's NHL Hockey for PC page:

        http://www.gbar.dtu.dk/~c937079/nhl/

or Kevan Daniel NHL Hockey'95 site:

        http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Field/8929

=========================================================================

                        3. System requirements

To run JED 3.01 your computer must have the following components:

        - about 200K of Free RAM in Conventional Memory (first 640K)
        - VGA Monitor (The color one would be better :-)
        - Mouse (with a mouse driver)

=========================================================================

                        4. System files to be changed

The editor uses 3 files of the NHL Hockey: HOMEPALS.BIN, AWAYPALS.BIN and
CRESTS4.PPV. You can place the editor's files directly into the NHL Hockey
directory, or you may want to create another directory for JED 3.01 and
simply copy those files, mentioned above, from this directory to the game
directory each time you make changes.

I've also included HOMEPALS.O95, AWAYPALS.O95, and CRESTS4.O95
files that contain the original jerseys and logos. Copy them to
corresponding files in your game directory if you want to go back
to the original colors.

=========================================================================

                        5. Screen working areas

To start the editor simply run JED.EXE file. The working screen appears.
It has four different areas:

   1. Zoomed Player Image
   2. Normal Size Player Image
   3. "Hidden spots" colors
   4. Palette and Color Indicator
   5. Logo Palette
   6. Game-screen Logo Image
   7. Information Line

The game is very well designed in terms of sprites - there are probably
about 40 sprites of a hockey player. Now, one of them is used in the editor.
Let's call it FRONT VIEW. What is good about this particular view, is that
it gives almost complete information about jerseys, except three "hidden
spots" which aren't simply visible on the FRONT VIEW, but are visible on
other kinds of views. At the very left of the screen the Zoomed Player Image
is situated. It is used to edit the jersey of the current chosen team.
On the top of the screen there is a Normal Size Player Image, which can be
used to see how the player would appear in the game, and is also used as an
UNDO tool.(Later about it) There are "hidden spots" colors to the right of
Zoomed Player - you can edit them as well as the visible spots of a jersey.
To the right of Normal Player there is the Palette, which is used to pick
the current color, and there is a Color Indicator, which shows the current
active color.

Game-screen Logo Image shows you the current team's game-screen logotype.
In this version of editor you can't edit it directly, but you can use
Update feauture (see part 8.)

At the bottom of the screen the Information Line situates. JED 3.01 analyzes
the .BIN files and determines which version of the game it is working with.
The game and the editor versions are indicated in the Information Line.
(Note that JED 3.01 WON'T work with NHL Hockey'93)

Now, the easiest start is to simply browse the teams and watch jerseys, and
how they look like on Zoomed Player. Use [Left Arrow]/[Right Arrow] to switch
HOME and AWAY jerseys, and [Up Arrow]/[Down Arrow] to move through teams.

=========================================================================

                        6. Jersey Painting

Well, painting the jersey is easy. You just pick the color from the palette
with LB-click (Left Mouse Button click), and click on the Zoomed Player's
spot you wanna paint with this color. Now, there is an important limitation.
You can't paint every cell of the image as you want, because due to the game
implementation several cells have to have the same color.(You will notice
that almost immediately when begin painting.) Use RB-click to pick the color
from the Zoomed Player directly, without guessing where this color is in the
palette. To UNDO the changes use RB-click on Normal Size Player. However,
undo will bring you what you've got after your last keyboard action.

=========================================================================

                        7. Color Adjustment

Every jersey (2 for each team) uses its own palette.
The palette can contain up to 64 colors. However, only few teams use more
than 32 colors for each jersey - that's why the palette contains so many
black colors.
When painting the jersey it can happen that there is no appropriate color
in the palette. To solve this problem use LB-click on the Color Indicator.
Then the Color Adjustment area appears at the bottom of the screen. Every
color as actually a RGB-color - a combination of three basic colors: red,
green, and blue (they are also called channels sometimes). At the Color
Adjustment area there will appear three decimal values of that channels.
LB-click on the value to edit it - use [Up Arrow]/[Down Arrow] to increase/
decrease the value, and the [Enter] to fix it. When you're done with color
adjustment click RB to resume.

                        8. Updating Game-screen logos

JED 3.01 include the new feature that allows you to update "game-screen"
logo of each team by importing the new image from PCX-file. "Game-screen"
logos are the ones you see at the bottom of the screen during the actual
gameplay. You can also export existing logo to PCX-file in order to modify
it later with you favorite painting package.

                                IMPORTING LOGOS

Press [F5] key to start updating procedure. You'll be prompted to specify
the name of PCX-file. Type it, but don't include ".pcx". The file should
exist in the same directory where JED.EXE is. After you enter the PCX-file
name, JED will replace the old logo with the one from PCX-file. (It's done
in 2 steps: 1ST - Player palette is optimized in order to create space for
logo colors. 2ND - Logo colors (20) are added to Player+Logo palette and
the old logotype is replaced by the new one.)

IMPORTANT: You should update logotypes on both "HOME" and "AWAY" jerseys
of the current team. If you update, for example, only on home side, you'll
get wrong colors on away-side logo. The typical procedure of updating:

1. Choose the team and switch to home side.
2. Press [F5] to update the logo.
3. Change to away side.
4. Press [F5] to update the logo, specifing the same file name
as you did on home side.

Player+Logo palette contains colors for both logo and jersey. That
means that you can adjust logo colors the same manner you do it with
jerseys: activate color and pressing LB in Color Indicator.
This might be useful to adjust some colors of logos.
(For example, I always adjust logo "background" to (16,16,16) -
which is an RGB-value for background that standard logos use)

PCX-FILE RESTRICTIONS: The PCX-file should contain the 32x24 logo image
of 20 colors. This kind of image can be easily got from Adobe Photoshop
by using RGB - to - Index Color converting procedure. It allows you to
specify the number of colors that the indexed image should use.
(Examples of such PCX-files are included in this package: COL.PCX,BUF.PCX)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DON'T FORGET TO PRESS [F2] TO SAVE THE CHANGES.
(Of course, only if you want :)
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                        EXPORTING LOGOS

Press [F6] to export current team logo to PCX-file. The logo will be
stored in ZSoft's Paintbrush PCX 3.0 version of PCX format, which is the
most popular PCX-format.

Press [Shift] + [F6] to export current team logo, but not include white
"border" that surrounds every original logo (by EA Sports), and ignore
color that corresponds to "transparent" pixels of logotype. (both border
and transparent area will appear black)

(NOTE: Exported images can be accurately read by
LView Pro, Adobe Photoshop 3.0.5, and ACDSee 32.
Actually, these are the only products I used to test the
correctness of exporting algorithm)
